Corazón at Castle Hill, a locally owned and operated restaurant, opened in 1986 just a block away from the original Whole Foods. The restaurant, originally opened as Castle Hill Cafe, was remodeled in 2008 after 22 years of business to provide a new bar and lounge area as well as an updated menu that caters to the vibrant downtown life that now surrounds it. Owner Cathe Daily and chef Michael Taddeo are still at the helm and proudly serve a menu that features contemporary Interior Mexican cuisine and many longtime Castle Hill favorites. I got the combination lunch special which came with a salad (excellent dressing, uninspired greens), chicken (Doro Alicia), beef (Kay Wot), and choice of three veggie dishes. The beef was absolutely outstanding, and definitely my favorite part of the whole meal. Just spicy enough: I devoured it.

Hudson’s on the bend is widely considered one of the nicest restaurants in the Austin area. Owner and head chef, Jeffrey Blank has several cook books out, hosts weekly cooking classes, and has been showcased on several TV cooking shows for his unique approach to local ingredients. They specialize in wild game, but they also offer more traditional seafood and steak prepared in ways you could never dream up yourself. They are a bit outside of Austin, being located 1.25 miles North of Mansfield Damn off of Hwy 620.

Capital Cruises offers famous Sunset Bat Watching excursions that include a trip up Austin’s Lady Bird Lake (formerly known as Town Lake). They also offer Sightseeing tours during the day on weekends that start at 1pm (This is a tour of Lady Bird Lake and does not include bat watching). Boats are limited to 36 people and tours fill up fast. You can use this system to book a reservation, but need to show up 30-45 minutes before departure time in order to claim your spot (PLEASE NOTE THAT IF YOU HAVE NOT CHECKED IN BY 15 MINUTES PRIOR TO DEPARTURE, YOU MAY LOSE YOUR SPACE AND NO REFUND WILL BE GIVEN).
